Having recently retired and moved to Boone, NC I am looking for information on windsurfing at Lake Norman as an occasional sailing option. Have been windsurfing for many years and enjoy all aspects of the sport from long boarding and wind-SUP sailing to high wind and ocean wave sailing. I sail often at Hatteras and the Beaufort to Emerald Isle area when I can.

Have also been sailing locally this summer at Lake Watagua west of Boone in eastern Tennessee. Mainly long board and Formula sailing there but waiting for some fall higher wind sessions. Anyone sailed there before?

Any information on Lake Norman launch spots, favorable weather and wind directions for windsurfing there as well as other local windsurfers to sail with is appreciated.

Thanks,

Chuck

Welcome, Chuck!

Your name sounds vaguely familiar. Perhaps we raced against each other many, many moons ago at Emerald Isle, Wilmington or Lake Jordan?  We're talking early 90's....

I sailed once at Lake Watauga in May about 15 years ago on a slalom board. The direction was WSW and pretty interesting, actually. Its setup isn't unlike The Gorge if you can hit when the direction is right. The locals told me that it's best on an East wind...which, as we know isn't very often.

Lake Norman is pretty good during the winter because, even in January the water is still probably warmer than Watauga in the summer ;-).  NW winds are good at Blythe Landing. SW are good at Ramsey Creek and variations between the two work at both sites. Both sites are only a couple of miles apart so one can switch back and forth. Ramsey is free and has no gates. I think Blythe might charge something until Labor Day.

I hope I've helped. I used to write out directions for people, but now, with GPS and google maps, both are pretty easy to find. Fastest route from Boone is probably 321 to I-40 then down I-77. Distance-wise closer via HIghway 16, but there're a lot of speed zones and lights to slow that route down.

Hi Alan,

Thanks for your response and info. Yes, I am sure we sailed together back in the 90's as I recognize your name. It was likely at Island Riggs, Emerald Isle as I was a local and regular sailor there from 1990 to 93 and again from 1997 - 2000. We might also have sailed at Harkers or Radio Island too during those time periods.

Anyway, Thanks again for the Lake Norman and Watagua guidance and hope to see you again soon.

Good winds,

Chuck
